Can I Pair Plantation Shutters with Curtains?

There are two opinions when it comes to pairing plantation shutters with curtains. Some believe that another layer adds to the room's design, colors, patterns, and versatility. Others find an extra layer distracting and unnecessary.

In truth, we think that even though plantation shutters are window treatments all on their own, another layer could add more interest and texture. Let's look at some of the pros and cons of the two alternatives:

Plantation Shutters with Curtains

Pairing these two together requires consideration in terms of fabric, length, and height of the curtains. As for the plantation shutters, a slightly damp cloth will suffice for cleaning the curtains or wand of lamb wool.

However, the curtains will require dry cleaning, for which you will have to spare time. Most plantation shutters exist in natural colors, such as white and brown, so it would be a nice idea to pop some color with colorful curtains. It would uplift the rest of the room's décor.

Plantation shutters are a timeless thing, and you cannot upgrade them for new styles. However, with curtains' addition, you can opt for changes when you feel the room needs some upgrading.

Yes, we did mention that many people love adding curtains to shutters for added texture. However, you must bear in mind that this is only possible if you play well with your shutters. A sheer curtain, for instance, will never work with a faux-wood shutter. The good contrast and choice of curtain is the only way to complement the entire look and make it look nice.

In the end, the curtains only pair nicely with plantation shutters if you allow the former to frame the latter. Hiding the shutter with curtains would not look attractive.

Plantation Shutters without Curtains

It is important to determine what style would appeal to your aesthetics instead of just following the trend. You may get a curtain with your shutter mainly because your neighbors are doing it but end up finding it distasteful to your sight.

Remember we said some appreciate the "less is more" formula? Yes, it's true, and you may be among the lot who prefer a minimalistic style. Sometimes, a plantation shutter looks better on its own. You may find it blends perfectly with the layout of the rooms.

Also, adding a curtain means more layers and more window treatments for you to clean. Curtains are similar to carpets: they can attract dust, allergens, and whatnot. These take more time to clean in comparison to shutters, which hardly require much effort for cleaning.

You will have to bring down the curtains, wash or dry clean them, iron them, and then re-hang with the shutters.

Most of the time, simple dusting or wiping with a damp cloth is enough to clear the shutters and remove the stains.
